Neate painted this (now classic) image of THE TEA DRINKER, using his expressionistic painterly brush work with collaged additions for the blue and white designed tea cup and the captivating, yet melancholic eyes. Under a wash of acrylic paint, collaged headlines and text from newspapers can be read ‘I want options’, ‘drama’, ‘terror’, ‘no regrets’ which hint at the mind set of the portrait’s subject.

The chair has become a recurrent image in Neate’s paintings, later appearing in his TRIPTYCH WITH CHAIR’ 2007 which was one of the highlights of his PAINTINGS, POTS and PRINTS, August 2007, exhibition, and most recently as THE BLACK CHAIR in DIMENSIONAL EDITIONS & PAINTINGS, October 2012.
