Elms Lesters hosted the first ever one-man show of portrait paintings by George Underwood in November 1997.
As a 15-year-old boy, George Underwood came to blows with his childhood friend, David Jones, who would ‘become’ David Bowie, over a girl in a disagreement which resulted in Bowie’s distinctive ‘alien eye’. Their friendship endured, however, with the two making a record together as The King Bees and George later designing the album covers for Hunky Dory and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
This exhibition included portraits of Bowie, Marc Bolan, Jimi Hendrix and Mick Jagger.
