Exhibition Info
After being introduced to the fascinating world of ‘tribal’ art by Portuguese artist José de Guimaraes, whose work was directly informed by his time spent in Mozambique during his early twenties, Paul Jones began travelling extensively predominantly in Africa, buying fine examples of masks, sculptures, utilitarian objects, textiles and beadwork.
Juxtaposing these unique objects with contemporary western paintings, sculpture and ceramics resulted in the exhibition ISTHMUS, a name symbolising a piece of land, or material, that bridges to larger parts.
This exhibition in 1992 featured paintings by Peter Denmark, Jeremy Cook and José de Guimaraes, ceramics by Dan Kelly, and masks, marionettes and figurative door locks from Mali, textiles from Congo, body ornaments from Papua New Guinea, and shields from Irian Jaya.
