The enigmatic Brazilian philanthropist, publisher and collector CHARLES COSAC, first brought the work of SIRON FRANCO to Elms Lesters in 1992.
Siron Franco (b. 1947, Goiàs Velho) is an internationally renowned artist from Brazil whose preferred mediums are painting, drawing and sculpture.
Franco’s painting, Mémoria (pictured right) , which was included in the exhibition at Elms Lesters, was the first donation made to ESCALA (Essex Collection of Art from Latin America – formerly known as the University of Essex Collection of Latin American Art) in 1993 by University of Essex graduate CHARLES COSAC.
ESCALA has the largest public collection of work by Franco in Europe and in 1995 Professor Ades, ESCALA Founding Director, wrote Siron Franco: Figures and Likenesses, Paintings from 1968 to 1995, the first detailed study in English of the artist.
A major exhibition SIRON FRANCO : SUSPICIOUS STORY is being held at FIRSTSITE museum in Colchester, Essex between 23 June – 4 November 2012
